The Uthmaniyah CO2-EOR Demonstration Project is Saudi Arabia's first CCS project. The plan is to capture 0.8 Mtpa CO2 at the Hawiyah gas plant and transport it via 70 km of pipelines to Uthmaniyah in the Ghawar field.
The plan is, according to the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF), to determine incremental oil recovery (beyond water flooding), estimate sequestered CO2, address the risks and uncertainties involved (including migration of CO2 within the reservoir), and identify operational concerns. The object is also to test new CO2 monitoring technology.
The project is expected to last for 4-5 years.
