The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, or Recovery Act, awarded the Office of Energy Efficiency (EERE) $16.8 billion for various clean energy programmes and initiatives, intended to boost the US economy, protect the environment and reduce the country's dependence on oil imports. In September 2010, the Act awarded funds to more than 25 projects that capture and sequester CO2 emissions from industrial sources, including power plants, cement plants, chemical plants, refineries, paper mills, and manufacturing facilities into underground formations.
