Shengli oilfield

Sinopec has begun to expand CO2 capture capacity at its Shengli power plant in Dongying, near the Shengli oilfield in Shangdong province. An integrated pilot plant currently captures 40,000 tonnes per annum of CO2 for EOR projects, and a second phase will increase post-combustion capture capacity to 1 million tonnes per annum.

In May 2012, there were media reports that Sinopec had announced that this facility would be operational by 2015. The captured CO2 will be used for EOR at the Shengli oilfield to increase oil recovery by between 10% and 15%. In March 2012, Sinopec, Nanjing Chemical Group Research Institute and Shengli oilfield, along with several colleges, successfully applied for financial support for its "Development and Application Demonstration of Carbon Capture, EOR and Storage Technology at Large-scale Coal-fired Power Plant" project.

The captured CO2 will be transported by pipeline for use in EOR at Shengli oilfield, for which a commercial deal has already been agreed.
