Wyoming is the largest producer of coal in the US and has promoted sequestration. This project will demonstrate the sequestration potential in the widespread eolian Nugget sandstones. The Big Sky Partnership’s large-volume injection test will be located at the Riley Ridge Unit on the LaBarge Platform in Southwest Wyoming. The CO2-source will be a proposed gas- and helium-processing facility slated to be built at the base of the Wyoming Range, near Big Piney in Sublette County.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) awarded $66.9 Million to the BIg Sky partnership in November 2008 for the DOE's seventh demonstration project. The project is expected to cost $130.6 Million. The project is to last a total of 4 years.

The Big Sky Carbon Sequestration Partnership (BSCSP) is one of the U.S. Department of Energy's seven regional carbon sequestration partnerships. The partnerships engage key stakeholders to create a nationwide network that will help determine the best approaches for capturing and permanently storing greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

The BSCSP region encompasses Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota, eastern Washington and Oregon. Its membership includes universities, national laboratories, private companies, state agencies and Native American tribes. The BSCSP relies on existing technologies from the fields of engineering, geology, chemistry, biology, geographic information systems (GIS) and economics to develop novel approaches for both geologic and terrestrial carbon storage in our region. The BSCSP engages in cutting-edge carbon sequestration research and development; economic and regulatory analyses; public education and outreach; and regional demonstration projects to deploy new technologies.
