Brief description:

Nuon is a Dutch utility company that produces, sells and delivers electricity, gas, heat and additional services. The company is active in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and has more than 2.7 million customers.[citation needed] With over 10,000 employees in 2005 it achieved a net turnover of 5.0 billion euros.

The main shareholders of Nuon are the provinces of Gelderland, Noord-Holland, Amsterdam and the province of Friesland. They represent over 76%. The other shareholders, each with less than 3% of the shares are around 65 smaller towns and the province of Flevoland.

On February 23, 2009, the Swedish power company Vattenfall announced that they were buying Nuon. By buying Nuon, Vattenfall is aiming to become one of the largest power companies in northern Europe.
