Brief description:

Basin Electric Power Cooperative is one of America's largest electric generation and transmission cooperatives, a not-for-profit operator which was set up in 1961 to provide power to a consortium of rural electric cooperatives. It has eight subsidiary companies, and a portfolio that includes coal, gas, oil, nuclear,and renewable energy, including wind power. It is consumer owned by 134 member cooperative systems in nine USA states, and serves 2.8 million consumers. Its headquarters are in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Its subsidiary Dakota Gasification Company (Dakota Gas) owns and operates the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, which captures and sequesters nearly 50% of its CO2 emissions.
