ConocoPhillips
Brief description:
Headquartered in Houston, Texas, the company has approximately 29,900 employees worldwide and assets of $155 billion. ConocoPhillips stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "COP." ConocoPhillips is the second-largest refiner in the United States, with crude oil processing capacity of approximately 2.0 MMBD, and the world’s fourth-largest nongovernment-controlled refiner, with crude oil processing capacity of nearly 2.7 MMBD globally. The Midstream business purchases raw natural gas from producers and gathers natural gas through extensive pipeline gathering systems. The gathered natural gas then is processed to extract NGL. The remaining residue gas is marketed to electrical utilities, industrial users and marketing companies. Most of the natural gas liquids are fractionated – separated into individual components, such as ethane, propane and butane. These individual products are marketed as chemical feedstock, fuel or refinery blendstock.
Through its Exploration and Production (E&P) segment, ConocoPhillips explores for, produces, transports and markets crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGL) and bitumen on a worldwide basis. Operations to liquefy and transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) also are included in the E&P segment.
Key focus areas include legacy assets, as well as developing major new projects and exploring for new reserves in promising areas. The company’s portfolio includes legacy assets in the U.S. Lower 48 states, Alaska, Canada, the United Kingdom and Norway; growth opportunities offered through major development projects in the Middle East, North Africa and the Asia Pacific Region; and a global exploration program.
At year-end 2009, ConocoPhillips had exploration activities in 15 countries and produced hydrocarbons in 13, with proved reserves in three additional countries. Producing areas included the United States, Norway, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, offshore Timor-Leste in the Timor Sea, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Libya, Nigeria, Algeria and Russia.
The company’s Refining and Marketing (R&M) operations are comprised of global refining, marketing and transportation of petroleum products and related specialty businesses, as well as the development and management of downstream technology. These businesses upgrade crude oil and other feedstocks into higher-value petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, lubricants, coke and other specialty products.
