Agrium fertilizer plant with CO2 pipeline planned

Agricultural products manufacturer, Agrium, has begun construction of a pre-combustion CO2 capture unit at its fertiliser plant in Redwater, Alberta. When operational, the facility will capture around 0.58 million tonnes of CO2 a year, which is destined for a number of enhanced oil recovery operations. In particular, Agrium has signed a long-term supply agreement with Enhance Energy for its Alberta Carbon Trunk line (ACTL), which will transport the captured gas 234 miles to the Clive oilfield for use in several EOR projects. The plant is expected to be fully operational by 2014.

Agrium is also a member of the Integrated CO2 Network (ICON), a group of Canadian companies, from industry and the hydrocarbon sector, which seeks to develop and deploy CCS in the country.
