ZERO advisor to give keynote speech at the National CCS Conference

Filed under:

ZERO’s political advisor Camilla Svendsen Skriung will give a keynote speech at the National CCS Conference in Australia on Tuesday September 2, 2014.

The title of the keynote speech is “CCS and the international Environmental NGO Network – Climate change mitigation and the need for an effective policy framework”. National CCS Week has posted a Q&A with Svendsen Skriung on their web site, where she talks about some of key challenges we face before we can have a successful deployment of CCS.

- The appropriate political framework can secure faster CO2 reductions in Australia and the rest of the world, says Camilla Svendsen Skriung.

ZERO released a report last year which presented the certificate system as an alternative to the existing political frameworks.

-The major advantage of the certificate system is that politicians are setting a specific binding target for CCS deployment, while the market is setting the price for the certificates to fulfill the volume. With the right system design, this will efficiently ensure target fulfillment. The certificate system is politically attractive for its efficiency to ensure political goals. We have examples of successful certificate systems in Sweden and Norway, which have proven to spark the deployment of renewable energy, Svendsen Skriung continues.

- The bottom line is, if you extract carbon, you are responsible for putting it back down.

The National CCS Conference is a part of the Australian National CCS Week, and is a biannual conference with Australian and international speakers.
