CCS – Challenges and Possibilities at ZERO13

Filed under:

Europe and the EU have not yet succeeded in building any CCS projects, despite ambitious plans and efforts for over a decade, both from authorities and the industry itself. There has been a lack of effective, long-term instruments and framework for this climate technology. Now the EU has initiated a new process, inviting inputs on the needed next steps to ensure building of CCS. ZERO has responded to this initiative, and will present our recommendations for financing CCS at ZERO13.

The CCS group session on November 6, called CCS – Challenges and Possibilities, will take on issues like how to overcome the barriers like low financial means and lack of good regulation, and the role of EU and storage as a blockade factor. We will also discuss how to implement CCS alongside the needed development of renewable energy.

The session will be opened by Gøril Andreassen, Head of the department of oil, gas and industry in ZERO, who will present the organisation’s latest report and recommendations for policy makers in Europe and the EU.

ZERO has also invited Nathalie Lemarcis - Director, Project Finance and Power at Société Générale, Chris Littlecott, Policy Adviser on CCS and EU affairs with E3G and SCCS, and Øyvind Vessia, Policy Officer, Renewable Energy and CCS, European Commission, DG Energy to comment on ZERO’s recommendations and share their perspectives on CCS focusing on financing, future relevance and the EU.

Also, during the plenary sessions on November 5, 2013, Dr. Myles Allen will be talking about how everyone who wants to extract or import fossil fuels should have to capture and store an increasing amount of the CO2 they emit during energy production.
