Nine groups apply for EU CCS money in UK

av Indira Mann 10.Feb.2011 - 16:40

The UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has received nine applications for European Commission funding to build CCS projects in the UK, according to a ministry spokesman. Of those nine, Scottish and Southern Energy has submitted a proposal to develop a carbon capture and storage project at its gas-fired power station in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. Peel Energy also announced it had applied for funding for a coal and biomass-fuelled power station at Hunterston, also in Scotland.

Power producer Drax and France's Alstom submitted plans to build a 426MW CCS demonstration project at Drax's Selby power plant site. The Hatfield carbon capture project has also applied to the NER 300 funding programme, despite the owner Powerfuel plc having gone into receivership in December 2010.

No other details are currently available. but DECC is understood to have said it will make a “more complete announcement” about the submissions next week.

Project sponsors across the EU had to submit plans to their respective governments by 9 February. The NER 300 funding will come from the sale of 300 million allowances to emit CO2 under Europe’s cap-and-trade programme. The final number of projects would depend on the resources available, according to the Commission.
